His areas of research interest in mathematics include applying mathematics to solving problems in science, numerical computing, the theory of numbers and their properties, and the history of mathematics. His teaching interests include using computers, writing, and interdisciplinary applications in the mathematics curriculum. Chris has authored over 100 journal articles presenting the results of his research in technical journals. He is the book review editor for the Mathematics and Computer Education Journal. He has given numerous lectures on his mathematical results and workshops on curriculum reform and the use of technology in teaching and learning mathematics at universities and colleges throughout the country.
Chris Arney is a graduate of Sodus Central School, class of 1967. He attended the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point and graduated in 1971. He was commissioned into the Military Intelligence branch of the Army, with a three-year detail as an Armor officer. He had early assignments in the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii and the 18th Airborne Corps in Fort Bragg. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY for graduate schooling, receiving M.S. degrees in mathematics and computer science and a Ph.D in mathematics in 1985. He has taught mathematics at USMA for a total of 14 years and is the author of several mathematics textbooks and laboratory manuals incorporating the use of computers in learning mathematics. His recent military assignments were as a training officer at Fort Dix, NJ and a Brigade S-3 at Fort Monmouth, NJ. He is currently a Colonel in the Army and serves as the Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at USMA. He also helps the Athletic Department as the Officer Representative for the Army Women's Soccer Team. He previously coached the men's Junior Varsity team.
